The Program

The Australia Awards Global Support Mechanism (AAGSM) is an initiative designed to enhance the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (DFAT) international scholarship program delivery by providing operational, technical and analytical services to DFAT and the broader scholarship delivery network. In doing so, the AAGSM will enhance DFAT’s capacity to drive policy, partnerships and respond to the demand for evolved scholarship program delivery architecture. The AAGSM consists of the Global Support Unit (GSU) - responsible for operational and technical services to DFAT’s International Education and Scholarships Branch (EDB) and scholarship network, and the Global Research Unit (GRU)

The Role

The Web Designer supports the GSU in maintaining the quality, consistency and visual integrity of the Australia Awards website, ensuring alignment with approved branding standards, accessibility requirements and strategic program priorities.

The role involves developing and refining web pages, templates and visual assets in line with best practice, ensuring accuracy and coherence while coordinating feedback from stakeholders.

Reporting to the Communications and Public Diplomacy Manager, the position contributes to clear, accessible and professional digital communication, supporting DFAT’s Australia Awards objectives and ongoing improvements in engagement across the GSU.

Duties will include:

  • Conduct an initial audit of the current website to identify design, usability, and technical issues, and provide ongoing support to maintain and improve the site after the audit is completed.
  • Create high quality UI/UX designs and visual assets that enhance user engagement while ensuring full alignment with Australia Awards branding and DFAT requirements.
  • Ensure the website remains secure, up to date, and compliant by monitoring for vulnerabilities, applying necessary updates, and following security best practices.
  • Support the Communications and Public Diplomacy Team to refine and enhance existing page layouts and visual elements to improve usability, brand consistency, and overall aesthetic quality.
  • Build and update web pages and campaign landing pages within the CMS, ensuring they are responsive, on brand, and effectively structured.
  • Apply SEO and accessibility best practices to ensure the site is discoverable, compliant, and usable for all audiences.
  • Actively engage in design discussions, brainstorming sessions, and design critiques, contributing creative ideas and solutions to enhance visual designs.
  • Apply the latest trends in website design and GEDSI principles to ensure all materials are inclusive, accessible, and representative of the diversity within Australia Awards recipients, alumni, and stakeholders.
  • Support internal capability development by documenting web processes and delivering hands‑on training to the Communications and Public Diplomacy team, enabling ongoing management of website updates and content independently after contract completion.
  • Create responsive templates for desktops, laptops, mobile devices, and tablets.
