About the Program 

The PNG Secondary Education Program (PNG SEP) is a flagship investment of the Australian Government, delivered under the Papua New Guinea–Australia Partnership. PNG SEP aims to improve learning outcomes, equity and access for secondary students across Papua New Guinea’s highest performing schools, while strengthening national and subnational education systems.

The program supports the Government of Papua New Guinea’s priorities under the National Education Plan 2023–2027 and is aligned with Australia’s International Development Policy. PNG SEP focuses on improving teaching and learning quality, strengthening school leadership and governance and supporting safe, resilient and inclusive secondary school environments. Cross-cutting priorities, including gender equality, disability inclusion, safeguarding and climate resilience, are mainstreamed across all program activities.

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Teaching and Learning Lead, the Teaching and Learning Coordinator provides operational, coordination and technical support to ensure effective delivery of teacher professional learning, communities of practice and school-based instructional improvement.

The role works closely with schools, consortium partners, international volunteers, universities and teacher training institutions to support high-quality, timely and coherent implementation aligned with national standards and program priorities.

This is a delivery-facing role, suited to an education practitioner with strong organisational skills, practical experience in teaching or professional learning and a commitment to inclusive, evidence-based education reform.

Key responsibilities 

The Teaching and Learning Coordinator will:

  • Support delivery of teacher professional learning activities, including school-based, cluster-based and digital modalities

  • Coordinate subject-based communities of practice, including scheduling, provision of materials and documentation of progress 

  • Support rollout of teaching and learning resources aligned with the national curriculum and National Schools of Excellence priorities

  • Coordinate day-to-day engagement with participating schools, Heads of Department and teachers

  • Support engagement with international volunteers and coordination with schools, partners and institutions

  • Assist liaison with universities and teacher training institutions to strengthen professional learning pathways

  • Support quality assurance of teaching and learning activities, including inclusive and gender-responsive practice

  • Maintain activity records and contribute to MEL, reporting and learning processes

  • Provide coordination and administrative support to the Teaching and Learning Lead and collaborate with MEL, Digital Technology and Communications teams

Key deliverables

  • Teaching and learning activities delivered in line with annual work plans

  • Subject-based communities of practice effectively coordinated and documented

  • Professional learning events and school-based activities supported and recorded

  • Volunteer-supported teaching and learning activities coordinated with school

  • Accurate activity data and inputs provided for MEL, learning and reporting

  • Examples of effective teaching practice captured for program learning

Key working relationships 

  • Reporting to: Teaching and Learning Lead

  • Internal: Program Director, Delivery team, Digital Technology team, GEDSI & Safeguarding team, Communications team

  • External: NDoE, PDoEs, DHERST, participating secondary schools; international volunteers; universities and teacher training institutions; consortium partners and sector stakeholders

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Experience supporting teaching, learning or teacher professional development activities, preferably in secondary education
  • Strong coordination and organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple activities and stakeholders simultaneously
  • Experience working with schools, teachers or education institutions in PNG or similar contexts
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of safeguarding, child protection and inclusive education principles and the ability to apply safe and ethical practice in school-based activities
  • A commitment to evidence-based, locally led education reform
