Summary

The Prosecution Advisor will help achieve PNG's national goals for Family and Sexual Violence (FSV) prevention by promoting gender equality and improving protections and responses to FSV, while mentoring sector counterparts.

Description

Location  Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG), with periodic travel to other locations.

Duration  2 years initial contract (6-month probation period) with the possibility of extension, dependent on performance and program requirements.

About the Program
APLJ is the next phase of Australia’s investment in strengthening the delivery of law and justice services in Papua New Guinea 2024-27.

APLJ seeks to contribute to PNG’s law and justice sector capacity to provide inclusive, safe, secure and accountable law and justice foundations for peaceful and prosperous communities, equitable economic development and private sector growth.

The program aligns with Government of PNG (GoPNG) law and justice sector goal of ‘building peaceful and prosperous communities together’.

APLJ has a strong focus on addressing gender equality, disability equity and social inclusion (GEDSI): this includes continued and strengthened attention to gender-based violence and strengthened opportunities for women in leadership, as well as increased focus on the engagement of persons with a disability and other particularly marginalised populations.

The program will employ robust Monitoring, Evaluation, Research, Learning, and Adaptation methodology to assess APLJ progress and performance, drive knowledge and learning, and promote continuous improvement.

Objectives of the Role
The Prosecution Advisor will support the law and justice sector in achieving PNG’s national goals related to FSV prevention by promoting gender equality and improving protection from and responses to FSV, while mentoring and developing the capacity of individual counterparts across the sector. This includes working with formal law and justice agencies as well as non-state justice actors, NGOs, CSOs, and FBOs.

  • Qualifications and Experience: Admission to practice as a legal practitioner in Australia, PNG, or an equivalent jurisdiction, with at least 10 years’ experience in prosecuting and/or dealing with FSV offenses.
