Program Overview

The Vanuatu Australia Health Partnership (VAHP) represents a 15-year bilateral investment from the Australian Government to support Vanuatu’s Ministry of Health (MoH) to deliver the health components of the National Sustainable Development Plan 2016–2030. VAHP has 4 focus areas – Corporate Services, Public Health Priorities, Provincial Focus and Workforce Development.  This role will primarily support the Corporate Service area but will interact with the broader design components. On behalf of DFAT, VAHP provides technical assistance to support the MoH to implement their plans funded through the Direct Financing Agreement, and work with other development partners to coordinate assistance and implementation through the MoH planning process.

Position Overview

The main responsibilities for the Biomedical Engineer, Vanuatu will be to work within and across the Vanuatu Ministry of Health Biomedical Team, in partnership with the lead Biomedical Technician to support patient diagnosis and treatment by installing, testing, calibrating and repairing biomedical equipment; training users; maintaining safe operations, and making recommendations on possible additional equipment that could be helpful to meet the host government’s intended clinical service level standard.

About You

Selection criteria:

  • Tertiary qualification related to Electronic or Biomedical Engineering
  • At least 15 years of demonstrated experience in biomedical engineering, preferably with experience in low-income or resource-constrained environments.
  • Extensive experience in the installation, testing, calibration, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of biomedical equipment, including the ability to 99develop preventive maintenance schedules and maintain accurate equipment inventories.
  • Proven experience in capacity-building, including the ability to train, mentor, and provide on-the-job support to biomedical technicians and healthcare staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to create structured training programs, identify further training opportunities, and build the technical capacity of local biomedical teams.
  • Experience in building and maintaining effective working relationships with health authorities, suppliers, and other stakeholders within the healthcare sector, including regional and international partners.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to produce high-quality technical reports and provide clear instructions to a range of healthcare staff.
  • Sound problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a cross-cultural context.
  • Demonstrated commitment to gender equality, disability inclusion, and social inclusion (GEDSI) within the healthcare sector.
  • Experience working in the Pacific region, with a strong understanding of the local health system and resources available.
  • Proficiency in Bislama is desirable.
