The Opportunity:

As part of the Nursing Curriculum review, a nurse preceptor adviser was recommended to help transition students from the classroom to Belau National Hospital (BNH) and community health clinic settings. The preceptor adviser will work with the nurse instructors to support students to successfully complete the required clinical practice hours and assist them to them acquire the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to provide safe and effective patient care.
The nurse preceptor adviser and a locally hired nurse preceptor will support, supervise, and evaluate nurse students with the nursing instructors from Palau Community College (PCC) to enhance their clinical competency and ensure safe clinical practice as the new graduate’s integration into the healthcare setting.

Specific Duties:

As an experienced practitioner the nursing preceptor adviser will play a crucial role in guiding, supporting, and inspiring new nurses and nursing students to provide safe and compassionate patient care using evidence-based practice.

Support and facilitate education and training:

• Collaborate with Palau Community College staff to align clinical experiences with nursing curricula.
• Ensure the teaching space including teaching aids and models are maintained and ensure that equipment and sufficient
supplies and commodities are available for students to use during their clinical practice.
• Provide hands-on clinical instruction to nursing students or novice nurses.
• Demonstrate and explain nursing skills, procedures, and best practices.
• Communicate regularly with the tutor coordinator about the students’ performance, progress, and issues.
• Plan the clinical schedule and activities (based on the school’s and students’ objectives) and prepare the student duty roster, if applicable.

Enhance Clinical practice:

• Supervise and guide students or new nurses during clinical rotations or onboarding.
• Offer constructive feedback on clinical performance and provide support for skill improvement.
• Introduce student nurses to institutional policies, procedures, and the nursing team.
• Foster effective communication and collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
• Emphasize the importance of maintaining patient records in compliance with legal and institutional standards.
• Instill ethical principles and person-cantered care in nursing practice.

Professional Development:
• Stay updated with the latest nursing practices, guidelines, and industry trends.
• Encourage continuous learning and provide resources for professional development of students and junior nurses.
• Identify and report any obstacles to student learning at the academic and clinical site and use the clinical site standards to advocate for improvements in practice.

The preceptor adviser’s goal is to enable students to achieve competence and confidence in applying new knowledge and skills in a supervised setting, in part by providing continual feedback.

Program Sustainability:

• Palau Community College will recruit a locally engaged Nurse Preceptor to work alongside the Nurse Preceptor Adviser to
ensure the program is successfully sustained.

Key Requirements:

• A minimum of 5 years of clinical experience as a nurse or midwife
• Experience working in the Pacific or in a similar context.
• A bachelor’s degree in nursing (minimum)
• A strong foundation of clinical skills and knowledge and extensive experience in a variety of setting (including resource
challenged environments)
• Experience in training and mentoring others, advanced communication skills, coupled with demonstrated empathy and
patience
• A commitment to ongoing education, staying current with best practices, and integrating new knowledge into their teaching.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze situations, make informed decisions, and
guide student nurses in developing these the ability to analyze situations, make informed decisions, and guide novices in

• Ability to work effectively under pressure and deliver in a national hospital and classroom setting
• Strong communication skills and the ability to convey complex information in layman terms.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural context to strengthen capacity and transfer skills to other team members.
• Previous experience in developing a preceptor role/clinical placement program is desirable
